A New Kind of Live Event for All Learners!
One World, One Word
Participants at the Flat Classroom Conference Japan speak up!
A vital part of being a connected and 'flat' learner is knowing how to work with others face-to-face as well as virtually. Collaborative learning modes that transcend nationality, location and culture provide enriched learning experiences for all ages.
Flat Encounters provides an opportunity for challenge-based learning in a conference, workshop or summit format. Events often feature both students, teachers and administrators working in teams alongside each other using design thinking to brainstorm, pitch and then create solutions to global problems. These solutions are then shared using multimedia and other techniques with a view to transplanting them back into schools across the world as global projects or community & service initiatives.
Flat Encounters is about adopting 'entrepreneurial' as well as 'teacherpreneurial' approaches to flat and connected learning so that new ideas can emerge and be shaped into tangible actions within a community. This includes ideas and actions for community improvement as well as curriculum redesign to embed global collaborative learning at all age levels.
Past Flat Connections live events have been under the umbrella of Flat Classroom®, co-founded by Julie Lindsay. This newly refreshed 'Flat Encounters' is a rebranding of this successful model where conferences and workshops have brought learners together in Qatar, India, China, and Japan in the past. The inaugural conference in Qatar in 2009 is documented in this video: http://youtu.be/JmMqUJhJgRo
Flat Encounters - YOU are invited!
We invite you to explore upcoming live events and encourage you to consider joining us.
Read below what past participants share as the 'highlights' of the live event!
Another highlight was the student-teacher interaction for the final day (Strand C) - it was great to hear the students' ideas for the application of technology in education and to feel as though we were working as a team, rather than having a traditional more hierarchical student-teacher interaction.
Seeing kids engage! I loved the pitch activity both for students and teachers. The rubric and feedback were clear and effective and guided the process.
Meeting people and working with them was the most important part of the conference. The conference should continue to invite many students from all around the world.
